How Discord stores trillions of messages
A real system, step by step
You send a message in a busy channel.
One large service takes the request.
Many people ask for the same data at once. It asks the database only once.
Stores the messages.
72 machines now. All the dots = the 177 Cassandra needed.
Loading older messages · the slowest 1 in 100
Where the messages lived
STEP 6 OF 6The slowest 1 in 100 reads of older messages went from 40 to 125 milliseconds down to 15.

Spec sheet · the short version
systemdesign.academy is an online school run by Roni Das, with two self-paced courses and an AI tutor built into every lesson. The System Design Masterclass has 770 lessons. AI Engineering has 210 lessons on building and running AI in production (RAG, AI agents, evals, fine-tuning, serving and LLMOps), and 118 of them show the recording of a lab that was really run. The tutor sits beside each lesson and answers from the lesson you are reading: it explains a part in simple English, draws it as a diagram, quizzes you, or runs a mock interview. The lessons are written, with diagrams that build step by step and quizzes, and 234 of them have code you can run in the browser. Each course is one payment with lifetime access. System Design costs ₹499 in India or $49 everywhere else. AI Engineering costs ₹999 in India or $49 everywhere else. 18 System Design lessons and 10 AI Engineering lessons are free to read, with no signup.

New · your AI tutor
Every lesson has a tutor beside it. It has read the lesson, and it answers with a real diagram, drawn for your question, in about half a minute.
Draw where latency comes from in one web request

Drawn by the tutor

3D figure. Asked: “Kafka producers, brokers and a consumer group”

AWS diagram. Asked: “A web app on AWS with a load balancer, containers and PostgreSQL”

Sequence diagram. Asked: “How OAuth login works”

Explainer figure. Asked: “How a CDN serves an image”

Press a question. It explains, draws or quizzes you, the same way it does beside every lesson.
Checking the tutor…
Each button sends exactly its words to the real tutor. Its answer is saved, so the next person sees it at once, and it is asked again after 3 days.
Pick a question. The tutor’s real answer appears here: plain words, a drawing when one helps, and the lesson that teaches it.
Then ask your own. A free account gets 5 questions a day; either course gets 10 a day, beside every lesson.
Try it on how Uber matches a rider to a driver, how Stripe never charges twice or how WhatsApp delivers a message, then ask the tutor how you would build it.

Measured, not guessed
Every number below comes from an experiment we ran and published in a lesson of the AI Engineering course.

Recall went from 45% to 90%. Right answers fell from 10 to 6, out of 20 questions.
Lesson 98 →
With no documents, the answer already scored 6.7%. With them, 15.1%. So 44% of the score was there before retrieval ran.
Lesson 99 →
The same 10 documents every time. The right one in the middle: 4 of 14 correct. At the end: 14 of 14.
Lesson 100 →
With 100 test questions, one 80% score could really be anywhere from 72% to 88%.

# 1,000 people open busy channels at the same moment.
requests = ["general"] * 700 + ["random"] * 250 + ["memes"] * 50

Just explained
When a new model or tool ships, we try it ourselves and write down what it means for the systems you build.
JEV-35B, explained: an open decision model you can download, what it needs, and a test of its prompt trickJEV-35B is a model on Hugging Face that never writes text. You give it a situation, one question and up to 256 answers, and it returns a probability for each answer in about a fifth of a second, by its maker's measurement. Unlike the hosted decision APIs from TypeSafe, OpenAI and Microsoft, the weights are free to download under Apache-2.0. It is too big for my 24 GB Mac, so I checked its own config files and tried its prompt layout on a small chat model: with that layout the small model changed 8 to 11 of 24 answers when I reversed the options.JEV-35BAutoTrustdecision modelsclassificationread the explainer · 16 min read
Intel GPU D-series (D270), explained: 480 GB of memory on one card, and what that buys you for AI inferenceIntel's new data center GPU, the D-series (formerly Crescent Island), puts up to 480 GB of memory on one air-cooled PCIe card, five times the 96 GB of the NVIDIA card Intel compares it with, at about the same memory bandwidth (how many bytes the chip can read each second): 1.5 TB/s. I measured the rule that decides what that means on my own Mac, then worked it out for the card: more users and longer conversations held in memory, not faster answers.Intel GPU D-seriesIntel D270Crescent IslandAI inference hardwareread the explainer · 14 min read
EmbeddingGemma 2, explained: one open model for text, code, pictures and sound, tested on a laptopOn 6 October 2026 Google released EmbeddingGemma 2, a free, open model that turns text, code, pictures, video and sound into lists of 768 numbers, so that things with similar meaning get similar numbers. That is the engine behind search by meaning and RAG. I ran it on a MacBook Air: it found the right text for 7 of 8 plain-English questions and the right picture for 6 of 6, at about 47 ms per sentence, and cutting its vectors to a sixth of their size kept the answers but squeezed the scores together.GoogleEmbeddingGemma 2embeddingssemantic searchread the explainer Free to read

5.0 from 4 reviews
The concepts were explained in a clear and structured way, with practical examples that made even complex system design topics easier to understand. I especially liked the focus on real-world architecture, scalability, trade-offs. The content was well designed, engaging, and highly useful for anyone looking to strengthen their system design skills. Highly recommended for software engineers preparing for system design interviews or wanting to build a stronger foundation in designing scalable systems.
Outstanding all-in-one source of knowledge, especially excellent practice
Ive started this course by accident - LLM advised me this site. When I passed few free lessons, I had no doubt - this course should be bought. And I did it with special pleasent price and it was best decision of the month. Content is great, interesting to read and with a lot of practial cases (what makes it different from other souces and books) I hope to teach all the lessons, that will be my supergoal. Glad that I found this resource and speacial Thank You to Roni Das - Great Job!
The material has been designed with a lot of effort and dedication. It has covered vast range of topic with sufficient content and diagrams wherever required. It complements well with other system design materials.
Due to time constraints I am not regularly reading it but whenever I get a chance I read the concepts which have been explained very well. For few topics I felt some more details would be beneficial but I am sure Roni will take care of that because I noticed that the content is getting refreshed and new content is getting added all for free with only one time small fee for lifetime access.
